Medical University - Sofia

Medical University – Sofia is the oldest medical institution of higher education in Bulgaria. The Medical Faculty was founded by the Decree of His Majesty King Ferdinand in 1917. The University has history and tradition of nearly a century in medical education and science. Many of our lecturers are scientists well known abroad and the University is a part of the European educational sphere. Since its foundation, more than 60,000 specialists were instructed at the Medical University – Sofia, of which 55,00 were foreign. At the moment there are 8,300 students, 2,500 of which are international students from at total of 52 countries, during the academic year 2014/2015. A lot of students are from USA, Germany,Greece, Italy, Great Britain, Cyprus, India, Turkey and other countries. The ultimate goal of the University is to teach and train students (under-graduates, post-graduates and Ph.D.) to conduct research and to provide highly specialized health-care for people. The Medical University – Sofia has internationally recognized achievements in: cardio-thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmic surgery, high tech diagnostics of human diseases, prevention programmes for cardio-vascular and inherited diseases, bone-marrow transplantation, development of new compounds of synthetic and natural origin, genetics, etc. The Medical University - Sofia has the highest accreditation assessment in Bulgaria - 9,68 /10 awarded by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency and is ranked as the 2nd University in Bulgaria and 1033rd in World Ranking 2014-2015 by URAP - University Ranking by Academic Performance. Our University was awarded the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education under the Erasmus+ Programme 2014-2020. Currently Medical University - Sofia (MU-Sofia) has signed Bilateral Agreements with more than 55 from EU countries and more than 15 Memorandums of Understandings with HEI around the globe. MU-Sofia has also signed an agreement with Chaudhary Charah Singh University, Meerut, India. The main objectives of the University are: To provide a high quality of education in a surrounding enriched by research work; To preserve and strengthen its position as an educational and scientific instituion of the highest international quality; To form high professional and humane qualities of its graduates in the spirit of the European democracy and tolerance; To help develop high quality lecturers and improve their effectiveness.
