A research intensive institution, the University offers a wide range of highly regarded English-taught bachelor, master and PhD programmes in many fields. Currently the University of Gronigen has a student body of 30,000, almost 5,000 of whom are international students. We are proud to have won the prestigious International Student Satisfaction Excellent Award for the last two years running. Many international students are attracted to Groningen predominantly for the world class education offered at the university, as well as our location, which is second to none.

Groningen is The Netherland’s best kept secret. Based in the Northeast of the country, approximately 2 hours by train from Schiphol Airport, the city is home to almost 200,000 people - of which one in four is a student! Groningen is a buzzing student city and a very safe place to live, and it is both youthful and vibrant. Our bachelor graduates can continue their studies by studying a master degree with us in Groningen or at another university around the world. Some individuals will decide to go further still and earn a PhD in their field of expertise. Notable alumni include the first-ever female graduate in the Netherlands and we also produced the first Dutch space traveller Wubbo Ockels. Whatever your journey, by obtaining a degree at the University of Groningen you’ll be in a strong position to take any path you wish.

Ranked in the top 100 universities in the world, The University of Groningen has 100+ English taught programmes, 10 faculties, 9 graduate schools, and 400 years of experience. Not only do students benefit from an international environment and a network of Global exchange, but they also are able to access 50 hours of free Dutch lessons.

In terms of accommodation, in Groningen students live throughout the city and amongst the locals or ‘Stadjers’ as they call themselves. There is no campus or campus accommodation as such - although to help international students find proper housing, the University of Groningen has reserved accommodation with the SSH. Corporate and private parties also provide rooms for students. Accommodation varies from single rooms to double rooms and studios and prices for accommodation in the year ’14-’15 are between €268 and €467 per month, but most rooms will be around €360. These rents are all inclusive (room, heating, electricity, furniture, internet, et cetera).
