Europe is one of the best regions to study world class Earth and Marine Science courses, and in ETH Zurich in Switzerland it has the world's highest QS 2016 ranked institution. The UK alone has ten universities in the QS 2016 Top 50, including the University of Edinburgh and the University of Leeds. The latter, one of Europe’s major international powerhouses for environmental research, brings together five institutes – the Earth Surface Science Institute, the Institute of Applied Geoscience, the Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics, the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science, and the Sustainability Research Institute. According to the QS rankings, EHEVF 2016 India and South Asia participant the University of Bristol is also internationally recognised and ranks as the 19th best place in the world to study Earth and Marine Sciences. Its school of Earth Sciences is home to some of the world’s best research laboratories and offers 1 year taught MSc Programmes in Palaeobiology and Volcanology and research MSc’s in Earth Sciences and Geophysics. It also undertakes Phd research projects in various areas including in climate change, ecology, atmosphere, genomes and evolution, and biogeochemical cycles, many of which can be funded via the NERC GW4+ postgraduate training award. Fellow EHEVF 2016 participant Aarhus University in Denmark also offers undergraduate and MSc degree programmes in both Geology and in Geophysics.
