Technical University of Ostrava is a top ranked university in Czech Republic, founded in 1849 and offering programmes at the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels to over 19,000 students in engineering, technical, and economic related areas. Over half of the 124 study programmes are accredited in English language. Research at the University is informed by close connection to industry in the region, which in turn ensures that education is geared towards helping students solve the real problems found in the workplace. The University is home to the National Supercomputing Centre, the only Centre of Excellence in IT in Czech Republic. This Centre includes Europe's 4th most powerful supercomputer, an important tool for engineers from all areas of the University, enabling such activities as 3-D modeling of floods and natural disasters, modeling of real-time traffic situation for the country, tools for car manufacturers when designing the aerodynamic properties of their vehicles, and other computationally-demanding research from a wide spectrum of disciplines.
