With its unique history of architectural movements from Classical to Renaissance, Bauhaus to Art Nouveau – there’s little wonder why Europe is rated as one of the world’s best regions to study architecture. According to the QS World University Rankings 2016, Europe has four of the World’s Top Ten ranked HEIs for this subject - The Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL) (2), Delft University of Technology (4), the University of Cambridge (6), and ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) (7). Several EHEVF 2016 India and South Asia participants are also ranked amongst the world’s best according to QS including Politecnico di Milano (15) in Italy, and Aalto University in Finland (51-100). Specific courses vary – but structural engineering, architectural history, principles of environmental design and building material studies are often key parts of BA or BSc programmes, which take three years, and these subjects can be expanded on at Master’s level. Post-graduate study is needed to become a fully qualified architect, which can take up to 7 years in total.
